Creative Projects
When away from the laboratory fume hoods or inpatient wards, I often occupy myself with sundry self-taught artistic endeavors, including photography, graphic design, creative writing, and music production. I have curated some featured works from my publicly released projects for this portfolio.
As a confluence of fine art, applied art, and science, photography has intrigued me from a young age. My exposure (pun intended) to SLRs began with my mother, a former photography hobbyist with a penchant for black-and-white 35 mm candid portraits, macro shots, and landscapes. Availing myself of some cheap disposable film cameras and digital point-and-shoots, I progressively developed my technique through trial-and-error with landscape and found-object photography. My foray into DSLRs commenced in 2017 with a basic crop-sensor kit to enhance the wildlife photography from my outdoor adventures. I now employ a trusty second-hand Canon EOS 6D and numerous lenses. I generally prefer true-to-life photography with subtle post-processing in RawTherapee and Topaz Labs, but I sometimes exploit heavy exposure blending in Photomatix or digital editing in GIMP for bold or surreal results. I also dabble in hyperlapses, videography, and video editing.
I began to dabble in graphic design in 2014 to complement my erstwhile interest in web design. Fortuitously, my burgeoning photography hobby introduced me to the open-source raster editing program GIMP, which doubled as my early lightroom and graphic design studio. Following some introductory designs of static webpage elements and desktop wallpapers, my first major project comprised a series of frivolous parody film posters for a student government election campaign. Their enthusiastic reception piqued further investment in my newfound diversion, quickly proliferating into numerous personal and commissioned projects. These included logos, wordmarks, posters, flyers, stickers, t-shirts, flags, labels, presentation & video elements, personalized memes, tattoo designs, promotional social media filters, and even partial custom typefaces. Although I began exclusively with raster graphics, I eventually incorporated more vectorized elements as I became proficient in GIMP path tools and Inkscape (an open-source vector editor).
Although photography and graphic design are my principal creative avocations, I have sporadically dabbled in poetry, (abandoned) historical novelizations, Horatian political satire, and songwriting (including irreverent chemistry- and medical-themed rap parody mixtapes). Additionally, I enjoy elaborate culinary experimentation, including brewing, canning & pickling, mixology, baking, and sushi-making. My orange-kumquat marmalade, homebrewed ciders, Jamaican sorrel, Burgundy poached pears, rosewater-pistachio baklava, crema di limoncello, tiki cocktails, fermented hot sauces, Basque cheesecake, mixed tempura futomakizushi, and kosher dill pickles are well-received by my friends qua food critics.
